So, I'm just starting to experiement with the Warhol style. I've creating an image using a photo of me. I chose colors that I like, and that I think describe who I am. here are some my pics for light and shadow. The photo that i took of the pigeons was taken with older non digital SLR for a little natural effect. The stairs I had trouble deciding whether if I wanted to use it for the urban assignment or the shadow assignment i hope I made the right decision.

This next set of pictures just absolutely amazes me. I was driving down water street in New Haven for those who do not know where it is, it is located near the old Colisuem building and is near the side of the train station. The street itself housing a school parking lot on this side a mexican bar also shares the corner. New construction of a new school is on the other end. primarily the street looks deserted then you come across these beautiful, awesome , creative forms of expression and it just brightens the whole street up. This picture is from the Monks Crossroads park in New Haven, at the corner of Cedar Street and Amistad Street.
This is the main entrance to the Sterling Hall of Medicine at Yale University's School of Medicine.
This is my front living room curtain w/ a soft sunset coming through.
I am in the process of moving so I have various things scattered across my apartment; this was a reflection off of a lamp I had in my dining room from the sun coming through a window.
This is a DVD spindle with a lamp light coming through the back.

I really enjoyed this assignment. It was a nice change of pace and fun to complete. I showed the site to my children and they had a good time creating their own art.

I got a lot more out of the class than I thought I would at the beginning. I am much more comfortable with using my camera and now look forward to taking many more pictures.

Hi everyone,

Stephanie asked in an email how to save the picture you create on the Ateneum site... here is the rundown... after creating and saving it on the Museum site, you need to hit the "print screen" button on your keyboard.... next open Paint or Photoshop Start>Accessories>Paint and select Edit>paste.... now select the area of your picture with the rectangle select tool... now Edit>Copy, then file new, don't save the first file... now select File>New and your selected area will appear... now, this is important, save this as a jpg file for posting to fotothing and the blog...

Seems complicated but when you do it once, you will see how easy it is....

I have been shooting a lot at dusk. Though I have a polarizer and have used it, I really like the sunset shots and the shadows I get from them. Let me know what you think!

I went out to shoot some street shots. This is much harder than I suspected. There is so much going on which makes it difficult to focus on a shot especically when trying to capture moving objects. Hopefully with some sun and good advice, I can start getting some shots worth printing for the project.

Hi class,

I have to say I am very excited about this shot ..

This class has truly helped me to see lighting, contrast and shadows in a way I never imagined... The shadows truly add a materiality to the shot that I didn't realized prior to this class and the readings.

Went out to Panthorn Trail in Southington to shoot some creeks and marshlands. About midway through the hike my daughter found a turtle in some shallow water which was definately cool. You can check out more photos at fotothing (seawhite23).

For this weeks assignment I took a ride to the Branford and East Haven town beaches. It was a beautiful sunny day but very cold. It was peaceful to go out on the beach and take pictures. I feel that I am becoming more comfortable with using the camera and I am trying things than I would not have done in the past.

I just came back from a shoot in Redding where I live... Here is an example of something to try... Since it was dark and overcast, (a good thing when shooting water and rocks)... I was able to do time exposures with the camera on a tripod... see how the water turns to fog, yet the clarity and sharpness is retained in the moss and rocks... The exposure was 15 seconds @ f16... notice I am filling the frame and concentrating on the essential elements of the picture...

Assignment: By the Sea

Look at Weston's work at Point Lobos, California. What kind of light did he photograph under? How did he move in and compose what ever he was looking at? For each photograph, consider the point of view Weston and the camera position.

Weston got down, got close to these rock forms on the beach. I want you to do the same

Read this short biography of Ansel Adams. Browse through his images of the American west.

You are to visit the beach, and look carefully at form, light, composition and line. Examine tidal pools, rock formations and sand patterns with the curiosity and freshness of a young child, say a toddler. Move in close, fill the frame. Submit your best two images on the class blog and post 6-10 or more to your online album. (Links in academic expectations below). If you live well inland and would prefer to visit a waterfall or brook with moving water, that would work too.

Hey jerry I was a little confused on what direction you wanted us to go for the second assignment. In the syllabus it says to try to find images within a urban or town environment, but then on the blog it just says you want a image with depth. I put up two images of a friend that took That I believe to have depth. the second is a urban town image which is where I rather go towards. These are my images and please tell me which you feel would be more appropriate for the assignment.

Hi Jerry. For my project this MOD, I would like to try to take candid pictures of people. I haven't decided if I want to do all B&W or if I will do color. I leaning towards B&W. Students in Digital II, you need to commit to an in depth project this week.... Run the idea by me by posting your idea to this blog and include an image, either of one of yours or one by someone else that illustrates the concept you will be working on.... Check the syllabus for a long list of ideas but you are not limited to those alone....

Photo I folks... Now begins the work of getting out there to shoot.... This week I am asking you to take a walk in a built environment... you home town or another.... Fill the frame with design and light... avoid including sky unless it is compelling and avoid photographing buildings that are far away.... move in close... look for light, and turn off your flash.... Here is the syllabus entry for this week....

Week 2

Introduction to Composition

We will learn to use line, mass, value (tone), contrast, color, and selection consciously in the creation of your images.

A big part of the photographer's art lies in one's ability to organize the visual chaos of the visible world. You learn to clarify, simplify and present your environment with intention and control. Here, we will learn to go way beyond "taking pictures", accepting whatever "comes out of the camera", and move to "making photographs" through your careful looking at your subject before shooting.

Reflect on the concept of selection and looking at the edge of the frame to consciously decide what to include and not incude in your image. Appreciate light and form and how that is central to your work for this class.

Look at the work of Edward Weston. Consider this image:

Edward Weston used his 8"x10" camera to photograph this small green bell pepper set in a simple wooden bowel by window light. Notice how he moved in, and filled the frame with the form of the pepper. The simple elegance and direct presentation of the pepper has transformed it from a mere description of an ingredient in tonight's dinner to an image that is transcendent.

Read Photography—Not Pictorial, Edward Weston, Camera Craft, Vol. 37, No. 7, pp. 313-20, 1930

Browse through Weston's other natural forms.

Assignment: Downtown

Photograph shapes, reflections, light and pattern in an urban or town environment paying particular attention to the shapes you select in the frame and the quality of light on the subject.

Avoid being far away or showing a whole building. Always shoot with natural light. Never use flash in this class... get in close, fill the frame.

Read about Paul Strand.... His work in New York City in the early 20th Century defined how photographers could use new ideas of modernism championed in painting to great effect.

Hello everyone,
My name is Tracy Petrillo. I took Digital Photography I in Mod 2. I was using a Canon Point & Shoot for that class and found I was often frustrated with the image quality, but it was probably also the way I was photigraphing as well. For Christmas Santa brought a Canon Rebel XSi which is an SLR digital camera. My boyfriend is a really awesome amateur photographer who has an awesome collection of lenses from his days of shooting with his 35 mm and he always wanted an SLR so that he could use the lenses digitally. I am still new at learning all of the things this camera has to offer, but it's been SO fun shooting with it so far.
This picture is of me and my son taken at the park yesterday. I'm not sure why it came out blurry, I had it on auto focus, but it's cute just the same. My fotothing user name is tracy77. I've posted some more shots from yesterday on there. Can't wait to see what everyone has to offer for this class!!
